There’s either too much sun, or no sun at all; it’s too cold, too hot, too windy, too buggy - perfect conditions are hard to come by. So we learn to persevere and create despite the weather. And sometimes, quite honestly, it's the experience of painting under trying circumstances that is the success of the day. I recently participated in Pacific Northwest Plein Air, a paint out and exhibit organized by the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, Oregon. There is an amazing variety of beautiful scenery in this part of the country. Each day we painted at a different location with varied landscape options.

The temperature was in the 90’s every day. For my Puget Sound thermometer – that’s hot. I was constantly seeking shade. One day we painted alongside the Columbia River at Stevenson, Washington. There were lovely views of the rocks and trees at the water’s edge as well as more distant views of the river and the mountains beyond. The challenge this day was that it was alternately brilliant light and sharp contrasts when the sun was out, or grayed tones and medium values when the sun would slip behind dark clouds. Not just fluffy white clouds but big black clouds that threatened rain. It was like a strobe light flashing on and off every ten minutes as the sun wove in and out of these dark clouds. None of my paintings came out that day.

Here are a few samples of paintings I did with more consistent light. The show at Columbia Center for the Arts will be up until September 25. It is a fabulous exhibit with some of the finest painters in the Northwest displaying their talents.

Anacortes Art Fair

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zLrAxwG0-6E/Tklbt-XksKI/AAAAAAAAARc/koEY4DrwYec/s320/IMG_1112.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641140853652369570" />
The first weekend in August is the Anacortes Art Fair. To coincide with a show of Fidalgo Island paintings at Insights Gallery, Plein Air Washington was invited to paint at the Fair. This was a fun opportunity to display work and explain to the public what it is we do. There were about ten of us painting along one block of Commercial Street. I began by painting an old bicycle from the 50’s that The Bike Spot displayed on the sidewalk. Other artists painted the old buildings along the street, interesting items in store windows, and even the fair itself with booths, people and colorful banners. I like the bike because it reminded of me of the first bikes my brothers and I had back in the day. Mine ended up being a faded red, just like this one.

Saturday morning I decided to paint an old building around the corner. Weathered red boards going in different directions, broken windows and sealed doors made an interesting design. As I painted, fair-goers strolled by. A woman asked if she could take my picture. While my family knows full well how much I dislike being in photos, somehow when a stranger takes my picture, it doesn’t seem as bad. Perhaps it’s because I never have to see it. Plus, they’re usually taking a picture of my back, or my painting - not me. I generally ignore my photographers and continue painting. After a few moments I turned around and was surprised to see not just one, but a line of at least six people all holding up cameras and phones pointed at me! I should have taken a picture of them! I could only laugh and keep painting.

The San Juan Preservation Trust

I was in the San Juan’s to paint for a show that Plein Air Washington creates to support the San Juan Preservation Trust. Our group has enjoyed doing this for several years. It's a wonderful cause to save and protect the beautiful San Juan Islands. We are granted the privilege of access to private trust lands to paint. One parcel on Lopez is a special favorite of mine. A simple road through the forest ends at the base of hill in small patch of grass. Leaving the car there I load up my gear and make my way down a narrow track that winds further down the hill through dried grasses and flowers to the sea. There I find a slim path hugging the shoreline. The hills above are windswept and trees are sculpted by the steady winds that come straight up the length of Puget Sound. Below, jagged rocks cut sharp angles into the water. There are views in every direction. It’s simply spectacular and I have it all to myself. Following the path to the east a short distance I find my subject.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SC5db8wnK1U/TklbDHhjqAI/AAAAAAAAARU/bJsGCKI7Vkw/s320/160.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641140117375789058" />
I was excited about this painting while doing it. The quick photo I took with my old camera before putting it in the show isn’t the best. It's currently exhibited at Crow Valley Pottery. If it doesn't sell after a while, I'll get it back and take a better picture to post. In the mean time I took a lot of pictures and hope to make this a studio subject.

Lopez Island

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 246px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jVtbONY4vXA/TklZlJpO7ZI/AAAAAAAAARM/HYciyqMqWdY/s320/162.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641138503037152658" />
I recently returned from a painting trip to Lopez Island. Lopez is very near the top of my list of favorite places. One of the San Juan Islands, it is a forty minute ferry ride from the mainland. I find it to be a quiet, pastoral island with a gentle soul. Residents wave as you drive by or walk past which makes for a warm, fuzzy feeling just being there. There’s a tranquility to the landscape that soothes my soul.

Generally I find it enjoyable to paint where people are vacationing because I like listening to happy conversations. One day I painted at a church in the center of the island. There were great views of the farmlands to the North. A family was bicycling around the island and settled nearby for a picnic lunch. Their happy chatter was pleasant company. It was obvious they were enjoying their time together. When people are having a good time their laughter and joy add to the beauty of the scene.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 152px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-igIjSif5MLA/TklZlEqxyPI/AAAAAAAAARE/ejh7tUYntFU/s320/IMG_1116.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641138501701454066" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 235px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XU-TO1NFEQg/TklZkk0t0rI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/f0O81zC0Y1k/s320/IMG_1106.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641138493153202866" />

My New Umbrella

For many years I’ve attached an old beach umbrella to my easel when I needed to shade my work on bright summer days. Last year this wimpy blue and white umbrella finally gave out. So this Spring, before heading over to eastern Washington, where the sun actually shines, I decided to purchase a real artist’s umbrella. My new umbrella is sturdy with multiple locations on the clamp to attach the handle which bends in almost any direction. It’s vented to enable the wind to blow through and neutrally colored to create shade without influencing color perception.
I inaugurated it the very first morning at Dry Falls when I chose a subject that had me standing in full sun. The umbrella went up easily and I was delighted with the large area of shade it created. Part way through the painting I decided to walk over and chat a bit with a friend who was painting nearby. Sturdy, vented umbrellas are truly wonderful, but not infallible. A sudden crash interrupted our conversation. A gust had caught it, picked everything up and dumped the entire set up on the ground. The painting was lying face down in the gravel with mineral spirits and paint from the palette splashed on top of it. My brand new umbrella was crumpled on the ground, twisted and stained with paint. Carefully I picked it all up, straightened out the umbrella as best I could and started over with the painting.
It’s a tribute to the sturdy construction of the umbrella that it recovered so well. I had occasion to use it again a few days ago. Being at the Oregon Coast for only a few days, I had to paint in the rain if I was going to accomplish anything. During one particularly wet afternoon, I pulled out my used umbrella and attached it to the easel sideways to shield my palette and painting. This completely protected my work from the rain driving in from the ocean to my left. I wasn’t sure if the umbrella was made of water repellant fabric but happily discovered that it is. I painted for nearly an hour and a half in the rain. I was soaked but my painting and palette stayed dry. I think this umbrella and I have a future together.

Serendipity

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_wb7cFRa4HY/Tidd8w1dTUI/AAAAAAAAAQs/QIHKM_NVXKU/s320/IMG_1004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631573157532749122" />
I love being spontaneous. An unexpected twist of events found me on the road to Cannon Beach, Oregon recently. A friend was sharing a place to stay and I was delighted to drop everything and head south. The scenery along that section of the Oregon Coast is spectacular. Despite rain and mist, I was able to set up my easel and complete several paintings. Plus, I came home with many photos and ideas for new work.
Initially I thought I would stay clear of the famous Haystack Rock. But once in front of it, I found it both imposing and alluring. Doing a painting of one large rock on a gray day can be challenging: How do you make it interesting? How do you move the eye around the composition? Where should the center of interest be? By exploiting the colors and putting in a few details at the base, I think my painting works pretty well.
We were blessed with minus tides two of the days. The tide flats contributed to an interesting painting of the rocks just south of Haystack. The sun was playing peek-a-boo enough to reveal wonderful colors in the rocks, sand and water. One more favorite place has been added to my list. I hope I can return soon.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 237px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CqpwkdCPcz8/Tidd9PeuJmI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/qpX4XCxmgLY/s320/IMG_1003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631573165758883426" />

Two Days in Anacortes

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7Gd9Q_l5yw8/TgqKvqidZMI/AAAAAAAAAQk/8tOScCIW4cQ/s320/130.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623459636202792130" />
This past weekend I spent two days painting in Anacortes. Plein Air Washington had planned this paint out to prepare for the Show at Insights Gallery the first week of August. Friday there were just two of us, and Saturday we were six painters. Sharon and I spent all day Friday painting an old cannery. On Saturday the group wanted to be more visible to "advertise" our upcoming show, so they decided to go to the Saturday market (picture below). Some set up on the perimeter, others, right smack in the middle of the all action. Me, I retreated to a back alley and painted where it was quiet. The value of being in the middle of things was clear when Mark sold his painting before it was even finished. They all enjoyed many opportunities to spread the word about our the upcoming show.

In the afternoon we all went to Fidalgo Bay where the Native Americans were holding canoe races. This time we all set up our easels together right in the middle of all the action (photo above). Our subject was the bay, the islands and the amazing clouds. Some of the paintings even included canoes. People were so intent on the races we weren't interrupted as much. It was fun to paint together and fun to be part of celebrations. The weather was beautiful and I came home with four paintings. A worthwhile weekend!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QlpbBzmT3fw/TgqKvVTrYvI/AAAAAAAAAQc/qqhRhU53Hic/s320/115.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623459630503650034" />

The Edmonds Art Fair

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s002RRDsj2M/TgEickIUHUI/AAAAAAAAAP8/Q10bWrSHc-4/s320/012.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620811684065320258" />
This was my first year to have a booth at the Edmonds Art Fair. This fair has a great balance of quality work and the public flocks to it. I planned my booth carefully, made new tags, painted a new sign with my signature and even had new business cards printed up. It was a great experience and I met many wonderful people. I knew going into it that original paintings are not the biggest seller at an art fair; it was all part of my campaign to make my work more visible. And I discovered people are beginning to know my work. Many commented that they have seen my paintings in other shows or galleries. People come to art fairs for different reasons. Some walk right by without even looking, others glance in and continue on. But there were those that would come in to my mini-gallery stand and look carefully at each painting. Often they would visibly relax and many would simply smile. They got my work and I knew I had succeeded. I would love to do the show again next year and perhaps I will try some prints with a lower price point.

Oil Painters of America

After Dry Falls, I went to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to see the opening of the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition. In addition to the spectacular show opening, there were painting demonstrations, talks by artists and vendors, as well as opportunities to do some plein air painting in the area. It was a worthwhile trip. The show itself is inspiring. I took some time the morning after the packed opening to study styles and techniques. The bar has been raised and I have new goals.

Although I didn't attend to many of the sessions, I did enjoy a talk by Charles Movalli. He lives and paints in Cape Ann, Massachusetts – one of my (many) favorite locations. It has been an artist’s haven for nearly two hundred years. Who isn’t familiar with Motif #1? Mr. Movalli shared insights about four specific artists from Cape Ann – Aldro Hibbard, Carl Peters, William Lester Stevens and Emile Gruppe. Mr. Movalli is an engaging speaker with fascinating personal stories of these painters. He explained how their work developed and influenced others, including himself, and he inspire us all to go out be better painters. Here's a photo of Charles Movalli with one of his paintings.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 194px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hgquqhpyuOU/TgEf0AxA5mI/AAAAAAAAAPk/jUZ5C1Jb-Ek/s320/imagesCAC4F621.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620808788354328162" />

Painting in the Desert

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-byDz9bAybAY/TgqHCX5jtFI/AAAAAAAAAQU/dh4XPjD4WQ4/s320/Remnants%2Bfrom%2BLong%2BAgo%2B-%2BCopy.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623455559570404434" />
I took a trip into unknown territory. My destination,Dry Falls, a geological wonder in central Washington. New terrain takes some getting used to and I was eager to explore the new palette of these soft earth tones. On the way I saw some pretty orange flowers and decided to set up and start painting. It always takes a while to establish a rapport with a landscape, especially one as completely different as this to what I'm used to. The most delightful aspect of this painting was the lovely serenade that continued all the while I painted. Melodies from several different songbirds in the sagebrush were a charming accompaniment to the late afternoon in the desert. It was a positive start to my painting time there.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t3xFxmLiv84/TgqHCPb90dI/AAAAAAAAAQM/Ww3krPwq8xc/s320/Seranade%2Bin%2BBloom.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623455557298803154" />

Second Trip to Anacortes

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 251px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ro4vMHLY8fg/Tffp2d8ZmKI/AAAAAAAAAPc/iJGYC4z-IjA/s320/IMG_0640.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618216182128154786" />
I have some catching up to do – A couple weeks ago I made a second trip to Anacortes. This time my destination was Washington Park. Many suppose that Highway 20 ends at the ferry. Not so. Continue straight past the ferry to discover that the road actually ends at Washington Park. Jutting out into Rosario Strait is a rugged peninsula with wonderful views of the San Juans. There’s a narrow loop road that circles the park with parking spots along the way. On this Tuesday morning I had it all to myself.
I took advantage of the high overcast to stand out on some rocks by the water’s edge to paint the shoreline to the North. If the sun had been out it would have been too bright on my canvas and I would have had to stand with my back to my subject to keep my painting and palette out of the glare. Sometimes our cloudy skies can be a blessing
By afternoon the sun was out and moved further up the road to a new viewpoint. I found wind-sculpted trees on a sunny hillside above the bay and some shade in which to set up my easel. I was drawn to the path that circled the hillside beckoning one to discover what views lay around the bend. here were a few folks who stopped at the parking lot above but only one couple hiking the trail came o see what I was doing. All in all it was a very pleasant day and I’m looking forward to another trip soon.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 251px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2BF4aXVeDWg/Tffmx0Y2DvI/AAAAAAAAAPM/L9qchaXWYyM/s320/IMG_0633.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618212803718811378" />

First Plein Air Outing

Finally, sunshine! We’ve had such a cold damp spring I was beginning to think I was never going to get outside and paint. This week has been glorious so I trekked up to Anacortes for a day of authentic plein air painting. There will be a show at Insights Gallery in early August. With a busy painting and teaching schedule between now and then, best to get a head start. Some friends had recommended a marina halfway to the ferry, but after checking it out, I couldn’t find any subject matter that appealed to me.
It can be difficult to find the right spot – especially when looking in an unfamiliar area. I decided to drive along the water’s edge to see what else was visible. In a very pleasant residential area I caught a glimpse of some old buildings. It was an abandoned salmon cannery just waiting to be painted, complete with public overlooks with decent views. I set up my gear and started in on some thumbnail sketches. I decided to start with a close up that would focus on the old siding and pilings. The sun was very bright and my Northwest eyes are not used to all that light. I was pretty sure my values were off, but not until I got home did I realize how awfully dark it was. Take a look -
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xgTlhBRBhCA/TdmDmSLfQvI/AAAAAAAAAOw/sw-IyJebWYQ/s320/047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5609659504604955378" />

So dark, I debated whether or not to post it. I will have to work on this one. When I started, sunlight reached most of the side, and when I finished it was all in shadow. Somehow I managed to capture a whole afternoon of light which does nothing for the clarity of the painting. Obviously a good example of how important it is to pick a moment of light and stay with it. Occasionally I can frame a plein air painting as soon as it’s painted, often minor improvements are helpful back in the studio, and some- times a total redo is the only option. I like to put paintings up on a shelf at home and look at them for a while. Then I get a feel for if it’s a keeper, a tweaker or a toss.
As the day progressed, my eyes became accustomed to the light. The second painting of the day was better. For this one I had the luxury of painting on the shoreline patio of a nearby home. Some very kind people welcomed me to their beautiful yard and generously told me to come any time. Thank you!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 252px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HVilujkaWHc/TdmEnD-6SgI/AAAAAAAAAO4/IfpNuRdg5Lc/s320/043.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5609660617485601282" />

A Drawing a Day

I teach a drawing class. One of the things I harp on is “practice, practice, practice!” No skill can be learned by thinking about it – you have to DO it. I recently challenged myself to draw every day. That’s easier said than done! I protest that I don’t have time, or can’t find something interesting to draw. But no, neither are valid excuses. There are plenty of things in my house to draw - my dog, furniture, dishes, tools, the view from a window, trees, shrubs. I could have drawn the snow that fell or the closet I cleaned out. Plus, I have a large file of photos from my travels. No, there are really no excuses. So I’m going to try harder. All it takes is fifteen minutes of drawing a day. . . . it doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. Can I do it? You betcha! Here's a few samples from my week's worth:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 202px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Evqvna8g9Xs/TX6Kx492UqI/AAAAAAAAAOY/fjbHT4EQvsA/s320/IMG_0434.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584053177696015010" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DqZp7FDjOwo/TX6KxIWDGdI/AAAAAAAAAOQ/qhz4QodRrgE/s320/374.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584053164644178386" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 218px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mJLMaBIsk3A/TX6Kw1gr4eI/AAAAAAAAAOI/zj2CnrKkLzE/s320/372.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584053159588520418" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vckCmR7hatM/TX6Kwcw3d5I/AAAAAAAAAOA/5W73OKgKukE/s320/370.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584053152945502098" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7mH_z_1erXI/TX6Kv-ywmFI/AAAAAAAAAN4/jozZqfd4i0o/s320/368.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584053144900376658" />

Watercolor Portraits

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4ZrYqzL6mZU/TXWtsck-_SI/AAAAAAAAAMo/B-ZLoXzR7Kk/s320/364.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581558292292762914" />
Sunday, I joined friends from Plein Air Washington for a “Paint In.” What’s a Paint In? Well it’s what outdoor painters do in February when it’s 40 degrees outside and pouring rain – we paint indoors. Several still life arrangements were available and a model sat for us during the afternoon. I really enjoy painting watercolor portraits. Our model was a beautiful woman from Rwanda who had never posed before. She made it look easy to sit perfectly still; it's not. I did two watercolors of her. Here's one and the other she chose to take home.

I've also done portraits from photographs. A while ago I did a drawing of my friend, Charlese. The drawing was not particularly successful, but I decided to try a watercolor from the photographs I had taken the day she posed. I think the watercolor captures her engaging personality and best of all, Charlese is delighted with it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 224px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--PtuGq3XaFc/TXWyOW1YjEI/AAAAAAAAAMw/w5zQIz2xWKg/s320/308.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581563272912997442" />

The Painter’s Process by William F. I discovered it in the library just a few months after he’d passed away. I met Bill Reese back in the 70’s at a watercolor class with Jerry Stitt. I can’t claim that we were friends or even acquaintances, but as an art lover I tend to follow the work of the artists I admire and I’d kept an eye on his work over the years.
Many artists are publishing books these days. It seems to me that many publish to boost their careers, but a few actually have something to say. Bill has something to say. In simple language he shares basic know-how, technical insights and philosophical observations. I find his laid-back style and casual approach refreshing. He says, “I always called painting outdoors, painting outdoors, never did I ever have the urge to break into speaking French for the three words it would take to describe what I do for a living, and then speak English for the rest of the day.” That makes me smile.
You can learn more about Bill Reese and order the The Painter’s Process from williamfreese.com. I wish I could have gotten to know him before he left us. Fortunately with this book and his many paintings, Bill will be around for many years to come.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://paulaensign.blogspot.com/2011/02/painters-process-by-william-f-reese.html' title='The Painter’s Process by William F. It’s a pretty natural shift for me. Although plein air painting isn’t possible with moving subjects, I’ve sailed in both large and small boats in almost every conceivable weather condition, so I imagine myself in the boat as I paint it. Makes it so much more fun! And with plenty of photographs from my dad, my daughter and my own collection, I have subject matter to work from for years to come. That’s not to say I wouldn’t be happy to do some commissions. If you have a boat to offer as subject matter, just let me know. Here’s a preview of some recent pieces.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 253px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tYX9HxJ_zx0/TVnQaqmIuOI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/xuiYpshQs5E/s320/300.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573715170377119970" />

Also, the Edmonds Art Walk is this Thursday evening! I'll be at Bluefish Designs, 425 5th Avenue between 5:00 and 8:00 with a selection of plein air paintings and perhaps a few boat paintings. Come by and see me! If you can't make it this week, the paintings will be there until March 15.

Abstractions

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 318px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TVCkG8Wg5lI/AAAAAAAAAMI/rxkmKKF32eA/s320/Fire.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571133178244032082" />
Over the weekend I had a chance to see the Open Juried Abstract Show at Seattle Design Center. It’s a wonderful show! I’m terribly impressed with artists who can be so expressive with line, form and color. All of the works are all well-executed and together present a rich variety of size and approach. I agreed with the jurors’ first place award to Betty Hageman. Her painting Alive Below is exquisite. Eight feet of oozing organic shapes created with soil, compost and charcoal. Not sure how she does it, but the effect is both elegant and primordial. Other works I enjoyed are by Suzanne Decuir and Daniel Santjer, both award winners, as well as newcomer Hillary Bassett Ross. But don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself. The show is on until February 25. The Seattle Design Center is located at 5701 Sixth Avenue South and is open to the public 10:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday.

The painting pictured is by Hillary Bassett Ross.

Natural Connections

The February issue of Southwest Art magazine is a landscape issue. In the editor’s letter, Kristin Hoerth comments on the appeal of the landscape: “What’s important, I think, is that paying attention to the natural world takes us away from ourselves. It shifts our focus off human-centered thinking and connects us instead to something far more vast and full of wonder.” Art should make us reach. Reach for something better, higher, even holier than what we are. Natural beauty inspires me to reach to become a better painter. And obviously with the popularity of The Sierra Club, the Mountaineers and other such organizations, I’m not alone in my appreciation of nature. In the midst of today’s turmoil and tension, connecting with nature is essential. So whether it’s a walk in the woods, a soothing water feature in the yard or a landscape painting in your living room that refreshes your soul, take a moment to turn from the cacophony of the world and connect with something that inspires. John Muir said it best, “Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into the trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”

January paintings

It’s time to share some of the new work I’ve been doing. During the dark, rainy days of the Northwest winter I turn on all the lights in my studio and work on large canvases. I set my easel up next to the window, trying to grab as much natural light as possible. The neighbors and dog-walkers are used to seeing me now, and often wave as they walk by. I've done two new 16 x 20's. plus this past week I pulled out a painting from a year ago. I hadn’t been satisfied with the water. I darkened the area where the rocks disappear into the depths. I think it’s better. I’ll prop it up and ponder over it for a few weeks. I'll post all three.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 252px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TT4KRiQ76uI/AAAAAAAAALw/-y3xOO7CPoc/s320/026.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565897485848406754" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TT4KRLc1HnI/AAAAAAAAALo/1_T41NrTCAA/s320/021.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565897479724277362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 251px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TT4KQ0Xn_LI/AAAAAAAAALg/bgpf4irQOR8/s320/019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565897473528429746" />

It's Magic!

Recently I watched Oprah’s interview with J.K. Rowling. I was interested to learn more about Ms. Rowling as I had just watched the first six Harry Potter movies in the preceding two weeks. (Yes, I’m a little slow getting to know Harry.) What piques my interest is her creativity. J.K. Rowling had a clear vision of what she was going to write. She simply sat down and let it come out.

When asked about the universal appeal of her books to audiences young and old, she responded that everyone is fascinated by magic because it gives individuals power to take control of their own life and create whatever they dream. Magic opens up a door of possibility in our humdrum world.

Before turning on the television that day I had read an email from Robert Genn. Robert is a stellar artist from British Columbia who writes twice-weekly letters to the art community. ( See http://www.painterskeys.com/ ) Covering all types of subjects and ideas, I find them interesting, even helpful. So on this day Robert began by writing about vanishing icons in our electronic world – newspapers, snail mail, etc. But, he said, “Fine art is on the way in . . . painting is hot. Old fashioned as the shoeing of horses--about the same methodology for the last six hundred years--art fills a vital human need for life enhancement.” Art enables us to be unique. In short, art is nothing short of magic. A paintbrush in the hand is no less powerful than a magic wand to transform a dreary routine or an unchallenged mind. Any kind of creativity works this way. So today - dance, sing, draw, write, make music. Express the magic that is within you.

Book Reports

I’ve rediscovered the library. I’m using the word “rediscovered” because there was a time many years ago when the library was my favorite hangout. Back in the day when the check out time was two weeks, I would bring home six to eight books, read them all and go back for more. Life got in the way and time to read was a luxury I couldn’t afford. It’s not that I have loads of time now, it’s simply become a priority to expand my horizons. So I’ve started visiting my local library, hoping to read at least one art book a week. I’m learning about contemporary trends in the art world, reading how-to books from established artists, and discovering biographies of past painters.

One of the first books to catch my eye was, “First Sight of the Desert: Discovering the Art of Ella Peacock” by Kathryn Abajian. It describes the life and paintings of a relatively unknown twentieth century Utah artist. I can identify with Ella. She went to art school in the 1920’s and, like many, gave up her art after marriage. After her son grew up, she and her husband moved from the East to Sanpete County, Utah. Ella took up art again and began to paint the local landscape. The author met Ella when she was in her 80’s and was drawn to Ella’s dedication and passion to her paintings. The book is the result of their unique friendship. Ella Peacock’s work is immediate and powerful, reflecting her personal passion for the Utah desert, what many might consider an unremarkable landscape. I am reminded of the value of each individual voice. Here’s a sample of Ella’s work:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 203px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TSthAn4pzFI/AAAAAAAAALY/V8QVr1uQupY/s320/epeacock1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560644828253506642" />

Great Expectations

As the first days of 2011 begin, I am eager to move forward and begin new work. Who doesn’t love a fresh start? I’m a list-maker and I relish an empty calendar. On the agenda for this year: exploring new places to paint and finding new opportunities to show and teach art. But most important of all my primary goal is to become a better painter. Over the past few days I’ve cleaned and organized my studio. I’m ready. So today I jump in and PAINT!

What Good is Art Anyway?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 188px; height: 269px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TOm4oeL8tFI/AAAAAAAAALE/H-C_nW8FyQc/s320/imagesCAS6WFOS.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542163821893563474" />
What Good is Art Anyway?
Well, I’m sure most people would agree that Art is a wonderful thing, necessary, in fact, to make the world a better place. Yet in these challenging times, artwork is being shoved beyond the back burner to the farthest reaches of the pantry. Artists and Gallery owners alike are struggling….more than usual. Hoping to keep the value of art in public thought, Joanne Shellan and I are preparing a short discussion for Lakeshore Gallery on Friday evening December 3. Art enriches our lives, it makes us happy, causes us to think, even heals. In his book “Seeing Out Louder,” Jerry Saltz refers to an essay by Lawrence Weschler called Vermeer in Bosnia. It describes how “Antonio Cassese, an Italian jurist on the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in the Hague would go the Mauritshuis museum to be “shook” by two of the most beautiful things ever made, Vermeer’s "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and his "View of Delft". Cassese didn’t do this, he said because the works are merely beautiful, but because they radiate ‘centeredness, peacefulness, serenity.’ These paintings were invented to heal pain.” We may not all find paintings that heal, but we can certainly find art that bring qualities into our lives that enrich and satisfy.

Fishermen's Terminal

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TOm3JlgTOcI/AAAAAAAAAK0/WiwU-ZKfrF0/s320/174.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542162191770401218" />
Here’s Janice Kirstein and Scott Landry beginning paintings at Fisherman’s Terminal in Seattle. Autumn colors cast a warm glow over the mountains and valleys, rivers running low expose smoothed boulders and the sun, low in the sky, casts long shadows. It’s a plein air painter’s paradise, especially when the weather is good. And this year it was perfect - clear blue skies with daytime temperatures about 75. I enjoy roaming the back roads in search of unique vistas. This year I discovered Pipestone Canyon. A sculptured wall of rock lines one side of a narrow canyon. I decided it was such a great subject I would do a 12” x 16” painting. It took some time, and some revisions but I’m glad now I went with the larger size. This painting, titled “Into Pipestone Canyon” is currently at Lakeshore Gallery in Kirkland.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 238px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TOm17iCP1tI/AAAAAAAAAKs/pFcdzTJfqkA/s320/192.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542160850809247442" />

Edmonds Art Walk Thursday, Sept. 16

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 248px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TIlOABYTEsI/AAAAAAAAAKE/eSSf9ha25wU/s320/075.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515024980969198274" />
The third Thursday of the month, the seaside town of Edmonds becomes a big art gallery. Sponsored by Columbia Center for The Arts in Hood River, this annual event features five days of painting at various locations for 40 select artists. Each artist could submit six paintings for the gallery show which hangs through September 26. This is quite simply the best plein air show I’ve been privileged to be a part of. I was inspired by the talent and dedication of my fellow painters and excited by the beauty and the variety of the scenery. Most important the event encouraged me to keep growing as an artist. Many thanks to Columbia Center for the Arts for their wonderful support and organization. I was impressed with the variety of subject matter…. and with the wind. It’s easy to see why Hood River is the windsurfing capital of the Northwest. I learned firsthand that it’s very difficult to keep an easel upright along the river.
When I travel to a new place I do a lot of driving, not only to see what’s available to paint, but how to access those sites. So often I see something I’d like to do, but the best viewpoint is in the middle of a busy road, or on private property protected by many “No Trespassing” signs. I usually start by looking for parks. The first day I found Toll Bridge Park with a simple river view. It was a warm day and there were a number of local boys playing in the flowing water. It was fun to watch them and listen to their happy squeals as I painted. Lots more paintings from this area coming soon!

Paradise

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 238px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TGnFzCuCwkI/AAAAAAAAAJY/1E4j_U2ccPQ/s320/068.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506149500131131970" />
Everyone knows Paradise is gorgeous, but I always forget just how amazing it is until I am there, standing at the base of Mt Rainier surrounded by glorious fields of flowers. It is incomparable and quite honestly, I don’t feel skilled enough to tackle so awesome a subject as Mt Rainier. I was content just to be near it; there is spectacular scenery in all directions. And contrary to popular thought, it is not difficult to find a quiet place away from the crowds. I did two paintings close to the parking lot near the trail to Mazama Ridge. The first was a bit of a bomb, but the second of Paradise Creek, I rather like. I’m looking forward to another trip very soon.

Lopez Island

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 249px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TGnEvRfoYoI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/sLL_B3tDJI8/s320/009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506148335866110594" />

Lopez Island is at the top of the list of my favorite places to paint. It is, quite simply, beautiful and peaceful - two qualities I constantly seek. This year I had only three days to paint on this special island, but each day was productive. Tucker and I had a wonderful time camping at Spencer Spit, discovering new areas and returning to old favorites. Here’s one of each - a farm near Spencer Spit that I hadn't seen before and one of my favorite views at the south end of the island:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 252px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TGnDNpfqfiI/AAAAAAAAAJI/v19Q357aIzM/s320/071.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506146658681519650" />

The Last Weekend in July

For nearly the last 40 years - I can’t believe it’s been that long! – the last weekend in July has meant one thing to me: the Bellevue Art Fair. These days it’s three fairs and so much more than it was 40 years ago. In 1971 I entered two drawings and was thrilled to have my work exhibited for the first time in a juried art show. I still love going, love the excitement, the new ideas from so many creative people in one place. I usually focus on the Bellevue Art Museum Fair and the Festival of Arts along NE 8th. Both have a wonderful variety of top-notch artists and crafts people. Being a painter, I spend most of my time visiting the painters. From seasoned favorites like Stan Miller and Teresa Saia to newcomers like Scott Jeffs and Amanda Houston, these fairs offer Eastsiders some of the best contemporary art available. A few more names of artists to follow: Donny Hahn, Mario Cespedes and Valerie Wilson.

Japanese Exclusion Memorial

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TFIRLCQkSuI/AAAAAAAAAJA/k1PG5tux4H4/s320/078.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499476976255388386" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TFIRKmZgsfI/AAAAAAAAAI4/AjzE491LeD0/s320/076.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499476968776708594" />

While I was on Bainbridge Island painting, I was privileged to be invited by my friend Sallie to the meeting of the group that has created the Japanese Exclusion Memorial. Designed by John Paul Jones, (who attended the meeting) it commemorates the 276 Japanese American citizens of Bainbridge Island who were herded off the Island at knife point in 1942 to be taken to the Japanese internment camps until the end of World War II. I was deeply touched by the heartfelt feelings expressed by the group – most had either been in the forced evacuation, or their parents had recounted vivid memories.
The memorial itself has been built and there is just some finish work left to be done. It is a lovely cedar wall waving gracefully down the hillside toward the spot where the fateful dock once was. It will be further defined by terracotta works, historical information and explanations, and clear signage so that everyone can find it. Art designed to honor the commitment, sacrifice or great works of others is one of the highest motivations for creativity. If you’re ever on Bainbridge Island, ask for directions to this touching tribute to these loved members of the Bainbridge community.

Places to Paint - Bainbridge Island

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TFIQhlO5PsI/AAAAAAAAAIw/CvTizfHThtc/s320/107.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499476264089108162" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TFIQhNj5KSI/AAAAAAAAAIo/yuo8H9ukLZQ/s320/070.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499476257734732066" />
Directions: Take the ferry from downtown Seattle or Hwy 305 from the Kitsap Peninsula. There is a city park with a restroom, but it was locked when I was there. There is a public restroom at the park two blocks south of the main road through town. At Salmon la Sac there are no supplies. There is parking as well as vault toilets both at the day use picnic area in the Salmon la Sac campground and the Salmon la Sac trailhead. Both are well signed. You must have a Northwest Forest Pass for the Salmon la Sac trailhead.
What will you see: Roslyn is an old mining town from the late 1800’s. There are old houses and buildings (including some made famous from the 90’s TV show, Northern Exposure). At Salmon la Sac there are boulder-filled rivers, tall trees, rocky cliffs, lovely wildflowers, with majestic mountains in the distance from some vantage points.

Salmon la Sac

This last weekend I joined a few other plein air painters at Salmon la Sac, east of Snoqualmie Pass. Although there is amazing subject matter in all directions, sometimes finding the right spot takes a bit of a hike. I usually set off with my pack of painting gear on my back, tripod in one hand and Easyl box in the other hand. This trip I had my dog, Tucker with me, so the tripod and box were in one hand and Tucker energetically pulling the leash held in the other hand. We climbed up and down rocks, through bushes and trees to find the right set up location. The first evening we joined two friends on a gravel bar the middle of river. To get there I had to balance over a stepping stone ford. Knowing that could be disastrous with a dog in hand, I let him go. He was delighted to explore on his own and I was happy to carefully pick my way across the stones relatively unencumbered. The views from the middle were inspiring. The light was changing quickly and I had to paint fast. I liked this spot so much I went back again at the same time the next night. Here’s the results:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TCt0vsmyuGI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/KkNFvdF1rjw/s320/059.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488608933657622626" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TCt2vaEQmwI/AAAAAAAAAHo/NWf9esalwgI/s320/053.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488611127704197890" />

Can I Paint Your House?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 245px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TCtzcdxhwEI/AAAAAAAAAHI/QemFY90q6HU/s320/063.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488607503746973762" />

My friend Susan lives on Capital Hill in Seattle in an old classic house. Recently I thought it would be fun to see what would happen if I stood on the sidewalk and tried to do a portrait of her charming home. I was able to get there on the one perfect day in June – cloudless sky and 75 degrees. With so much mature foliage the viewpoints were limited but I found a spot across the street to see the front door and most of the roof line. Getting the home architecturally correct and the perspective accurate was challenging. After a couple hours painting it was roughed in but knew I would have to continue refining and developing. I’ve finished it in the studio and I’ll take it to Susan and see what she thinks. My plan is to do several different homes to see if it might work into some commissions. The first five I’ll do will be free. Let me know if you’d like to volunteer your house to be my next subject.

Support Your Local Artists

It’s Art Fair season! Sunday, I went to the Edmonds Art Fair. The day was cold and rainy but there were still plenty of art lovers enjoying the creativity. I was tempted by so many things – glass fountains, handknit sweaters, garden art and unique jewelry. I enjoy chatting with the painters and craftspeople to learn about their experiences. Some are long time participants; others are new to the fair scene and working through how to make the most of the event. I especially like Jennifer Phillips’s work. Her paintings are strong and masterfully done. For the fair-goer she has a variety of both large and small pieces, all very reasonably priced for the quality of work. She also has created some charming necklaces by painting miniature landscapes on Scrabble tiles. These are fabulous! Check them out at her website: jenniferphillipsart.com. Local art is affordable and readily available at summer shows and galleries. Original art enriches our lives, beautifies our homes and offices, enriches our lives and nurtures our creative souls.

Brushes with the Land

Gallery By The Bay in Stanwood opened a new show called Brushes with the Land on June 18. Forty-two artists interpret the Northwest landscape in a variety of mediums. It’s a great show, and not just because it includes two of my paintings. There is a wonderful variety of styles and subject matter. I was especially drawn to the watercolors of Ron Stocke. http://www.stockeartstudios.com/ron.html His fluid colors and strong compositions are exceptional. The gallery also has many other intriguing treasures, glass, pottery, jewelry and more. It’s worth taking a few moments to check it out the next time you’re traveling I-5 between Mt. Vernon and Seattle. Brushes with the Land will be up until July 18. http://www.gallerybythebay.com/ Here's one of my paintings in the show: Rock Island.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 236px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/TCQuNaGYa-I/AAAAAAAAAHA/cqL1tZ1Dd-0/s320/Rock+Island.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486561053923372002" />

Inspiration

I was fortunate this spring to visit the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine. Rockland is near the summer home of the Wyeth family and the museum includes a collection of the three generations - N.C., Andrew and James. My parents introduced me to the work of Andrew Wyeth when I was about 12. Even at that age I immediately connected with his work. As I’ve begun to grow as an artist I am inspired by his art more than ever. Andrew Wyeth poured so much personal passion into each painting. His subjects were people he knew well, places that he'd known his entire life. I purchased the "Autobiograpy of Andrew Wyeth." It's seventy years of his paintings with his own words about each one. It challenges me to make my paintings speak more eloquently.

Planning Time

I am a member of several organizations for artists. I’ve joined them for various reasons, mostly to meet other artists and find exhibiting opportunities. These days I am most active with Plein Air Washington (PAWA). It's been a delight to meet other artists who are as passionate about painting outside as I am. But during the dark rainy days of winter the main activity of the group is planning the schedule for the coming year. Plein air painting in the Pacific Northwest begins mid-March and extends into October. As I plan my personal painting schedule for the year I consider PAWA’s calendar and add in a few favorite destinations of my own. Without the know- how to take a good, clear digital image of a finished painting, that painting could never be available electronically. I’ve been working on an update of my website. I am adding 20 new paintings which means 20 good digital photos. I have found the best success with my camera – a Nikon Coolpix – is to take photos outside on a sunny day. By setting up the tripod and easel in the shade, I have just the right amount of light. But this doesn’t work in the winter in the Pacific Northwest when it’s always cloudy and dark. After some experimenting I discovered that if I used the museum setting on my camera and two Lowelego digital imaging lights focused diagonally on the painting, I can get a reasonably good image indoors. Those lights, incidentally, have been a great solution for painting in my studio on dark days too.

Hall of the Gods

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 215px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/S1ZiQ9rt17I/AAAAAAAAAGg/4hI4Q0pXv6E/s320/564.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428634444417062834" />
I’ve been working on a 16 x 24 painting of Spirit Island and Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park. It’s a place that is nothing less than awe-inspiring, certainly one of the most beautiful places on earth. How can an artist do justice to such an incredible subject? I didn’t try. Instead I painted the feel of the day - overcast and with subtle colors, the water was calm and the air still. I’ve heard some artists say they paint the air to communicate atmosphere. I’m not sure how to do that, but I do know that looking at this painting I am transported back to that time and place and I can enjoy it all over again.

My Happy Place

Now that the rainy season is upon us, I’m planning some new studio projects for the winter. I have some large pieces in progress and lots of ideas for new ones. However, the first task to accomplish is to clean my studio. I can’t believe how much stuff accumulates over a few months of painting and preparing for exhibitions. I have tubes of paint on top of show brochures, hanging wire mixed up with bubble wrap, frames , sketchbooks, canvases piled on the floor and paintings everywhere. It’s time to sort it all out and clear enough space to work again. Maybe then I’ll take a picture. . . maybe.

Gallery by the Bay

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SwCiot7U_OI/AAAAAAAAAF0/ulNJsZ8QYwQ/s320/Water+of+Life.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404498373251497186" />
On November 6, my show opened at Gallery by the Bay in Stanwood. I am honored to be showing with three amazing women artists: Deon Matzen, Pamela Mummey and Joanne Shellan. These women are each so accomplished. That sounded intriquing. On the appointed evening I joined several other artists in painting “Sting Ray." It was a charity event for the Forgotten Children’s fund. I don’t do much figure work, in fact I think this is the first oil painting of a figure I’ve ever done. Sting Ray is one of a band of modern day pirates who appear in parades and promote charity causes. And although he had never modeled before, he was a terrific model. It was a great evening.

OPA in Gig Harbor

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SwcdGEnIVfI/AAAAAAAAAGE/5I-VaBFnzLQ/s320/538.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406321867835856370" />
The first weekend in October was a paintout in Gig Harbor sponsored by Oil Painters of America; and many thanks to Donna Trent and Gillian Bull for organizing this event. Gig Harbor is a charming town with a historic harbor. For this weekend the weather wasn’t particularly cooperative. I started several paintings that I had to interrupt because of rain. Each of the participants could bring one painting to Harbor Gallery to show for the month of October. "The Old Net Shed" was my gallery entry.

Ocean Beaches

September can be the best weather month. I planned a trip to the Olympic Peninsula for the last week in September with fingers crossed that the good weather would hold. It did. It was perfect. Keep in mind that this part of the state gets 150 inches of rain a year, so three cloudless days in a row is a rare treat.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SwCeZedwE7I/AAAAAAAAAFM/BBw71Q5Sgr4/s200/150.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404493713356362674" />
I started painting along the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Salt Creek State Park. Next, I went down and spent a day at Ruby Beach and the third day at Kalaloch. Tucker kept me company. He loves the beach, especially when we get off by ourselves where he can run.

Soon after I set up my easel on the beach at Kalaloch, a woman came over to chat. She and her dog were taking their morning walk into the fog. Tucker wanted to follow them but he was securely tied to a nearby piece of driftwood. I love that I can spend several hours painting a perfect morning, and then keep that moment forever in the painting.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 231px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SwCfhGjAAXI/AAAAAAAAAFc/-HtUiR7qg4Q/s320/Morning+Walk.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404494943886508402" />

New Projects

After all the small plein air paintings I’ve done this summer, I am ready to work on some bigger pieces. I must confess the most intimidating aspect of a large painting is all that blank white canvas. So the first thing I do is cover the canvas with paint. It’s usually a loose under-painting to lay out the general idea of what I have in mind. Here’s the two I started – a lake in Jasper and a sailboat race. Not huge – 24 x 30 and 18 x 24 – but certainly larger than 11 x 14.

I started two paintings because I like to work on more than one at a time. I can get so into the details of a larger canvas that I start to lose my way. I Switching to another painting gets my focus off one while work on the another. Then when I go back to the first one I look at it with fresh eyes. I suspect this is a pretty common approach among artists.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SqgyhA7iz7I/AAAAAAAAAFA/OtUflzX55Gk/s200/130.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379605297660874674" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 158px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SqgygZbcv_I/AAAAAAAAAE4/V2qhr17Gz24/s200/127.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379605287057276914" />

Fresh Paint in Everett

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SpG5c8N5BDI/AAAAAAAAAEY/5R9u1lKsDg8/s200/IMG_1718.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373279737281578034" />
Quiet, peaceful, beautiful, gentle… These are some of the words I heard this past weekend from art lovers viewing my work at the Everett Fresh Paint Art Fair. It was gratifying to hear so many positive comments and learn that my paintings are touching the viewers with qualities that I value. The Everett art fair takes place right on the marina and artists are asked to demonstrate their work throughout the fair. I did several paintings of the marina and enjoyed meeting the many people that came by my booth.
I could not have done it without the help of some very special friends and family. I want to thank Hillary, Christa, and Maureen and John for their time and good humor in helping put it all together. My summer shows have come to an end and I’m going to focus on painting and finding some new venues to exhibit my work.

Painting in the San Juan Islands

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 235px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sn4gus6yB5I/AAAAAAAAAEI/qaBfVYVA8nQ/s320/128.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367763792575989650" />
The first week of August I traveled to the San Juans to prepare for the San Juan Preservation Trust Plein Air Show. This year the gala is to be held on Orcas Island. I spent one day on San Juan Island painting and several days on Lopez Island. I really enjoy my time in the islands painting. With each trip I get to know the islands better and find more to paint. This time there were some interesting views with the morning fog. The painting I did at Mud Bay feels like that damp morning with colors gently emerging from the mist. Another painting, “Late in the Day” was started about 7:00 in the evening. As the sun dropped lower in the sky, I painted faster and faster to keep up with the changing light. This old dock at Mackaye Harbor is a favorite subject. I’ve painted it from several angles in the past - not sure how much longer it’s going to hang together, hopefully long enough to do a few more paintings.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sn4guc-te5I/AAAAAAAAAEA/Huo3fDc5osc/s320/129.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367763788297501586" />

Painting on a Street Corner

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 219px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SoCnuiUu4CI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/UgelcfALffM/s320/kirkdemo1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368475173755215906" />
I was invited by Lakeshore Gallery to do an afternoon of plein air painting as part of the Kirkland Uncorked Celebration. I set up a my easel and painted the view from the entrance of the gallery just steps away from a busy corner. The first painting was looking west, where my daughter, Hillary, was kind enough to pose among the benches and tables. Then I looked to the north where my friends Ginny, Maureen and John were sitting and watching the crowds parade by. While figures aren’t my usual subject matter, this was a fun afternoon and a nice chance to get out and mingle with people. Hillary took a few pictures of the art patrons.

Painting for the Whidbey Camano Land Trust

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 237px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sn4blwF9VCI/AAAAAAAAAD4/OZPSNLPSLBw/s320/104.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367758141251212322" />

As the date for the Whidbey Camano Land Trust grew closer I made another trip to Whidbey and to Camano to come up with some work to enter into the show. This show was tricky because particiapnts could paint only the Trust Lands, which were somewhat difficult to identify. After driving around one Saturday on Whidbey I finally came to Saratoga Woods near Langley. There was an intriguing path through the woods that caught my attention with a shaft of light breaking through the dense forest. I liked this painting, but it wasn’t the one that made it into the final juried show. It is, however, on view at Gallery by the Bay in Stanwood through August.

Jasper and Banff

In June I traveled to Jasper and Banff National Parks in Canada. What a glorious place! Of all my favorite spots, this is near the top with spectacular scenery and endless painting possibilities. One of the highlights of the trip was a boat ride across Maligne Lake. It wasn’t possible to paint there, but I did take lots of pictures and hope to do some studio work in the winter from the photos. In Banff, I camped at Waterfowl Lake. My children and I camped there many years ago when they were small. We had a wonderful time. They remember it as the place the Barbies went swimming; I remember it as a place with infinite painting possibilities. Although the weather was quite cold for the end of June, I came away with several successful paintings. I just might have to go back next year too. Here are a few of the paintings from the trip:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sn4Wqv5p1EI/AAAAAAAAADw/Pht8zK9UEJ4/s320/130.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367752729540809794" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sn4WqWAzxuI/AAAAAAAAADo/51HOczlQtU0/s320/120.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367752722591500002" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 241px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sn4Wp77WlsI/AAAAAAAAADg/iZaU_nm8CVM/s320/125.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367752715589293762" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 244px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sn4WpkkdVZI/AAAAAAAAADY/9ngLkMQ2G08/s320/110.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367752709319251346" />

Catching Up with June

June 19 - Beaver Lake
One rainy Friday morning Michele and I went to nearby Beaver Lake to paint. I started in on a 12 x 16 of some of the trees in front of the lake. Although it was drizzly and gray, I was intrigued by the light of the lake seen through the trees. It was so dark, I eventually abandoned that painting and started a small 8 x 10 of some lily pads on the lake. I think this one might have possibilities.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 244px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sl0RC3lW50I/AAAAAAAAADM/zOfXB8c_LqY/s320/102.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358457872618809154" />

June 15 - Tukwila

I was part of a plein air painting competition in Tukwila, WA. The town of Tukwila, quite honestly, is not exactly a magnet for plein air painters. I learned that the event was part of their centennial celebration. It was organized both to create awareness of the town’s potential and to encourage plein air painters to get out within the local community. I appreciated that there was no entry fee, no commission on sales, very generous prizes and several get-togethers for the participating artists. It’s great for the community to see artists working and interpreting their neighborhoods. Kudos to Tukwila for putting on this event . One of the paintings I did was of the sun coming through the poplar trees that lined the river walk.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 236px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sla24YTOKRI/AAAAAAAAAC8/luJxwIEHIMI/s320/185.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356669886515783954" />

June 12 - Whidbey Island
I’m going to participate in the Whidbey-Camano Land Trust plein air exhibition, Art Celebrates Conservation. Plein air artists will be painting preserved land and exhibit their work at a special event on July 19. See wclt.org for more Dugualla Flats at the north end of Whidbey Island. Michele is a talented portrait artist who enjoys plein air painting. It’s always a delight to have a painting companion. We had a very nice day and we’re looking forward to more outings together. I did three paintings. As most often happens when I do several paintings in a short period of time, one is good, one is OK, and one goes in a pile to paint over.

Here's Michele painting by the side of the road.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 307px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/Sla3KxTuywI/AAAAAAAAADE/DVgv49S4jCI/s320/096.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356670202466454274" />

My first day in Port Townsend was hot and sunny. I hadn’t been there for years, but I thought the boatyard and marina area just south of town would have lots of subject matter. I was disappointed. There were boats of all types and sizes hauled out for repairs and upkeep. The shapes, textures and details of boats – particularly fishing boats – are endlessly fascinating. I found a classic fishing boat and set up my easel. After a while the owners came over and introduced themselves. They were headed up to Alaska from California and had the boat out for week. They seemed happy to have someone doing a painting of their boat and we exchanged contact information. I prefer not to sell paintings off of the easel – partly because they’re still wet and could easily become ruined, and partly because I like to have some follow up time to add finish details. I will email them an image of the finished painting and they can decide if it’s something they would like.
Later in the day I started another painting of a colorful fishing boat in the water. I was drawn to the neon orange and pink bumpers against the brilliant crimson hull. The challenge was how to make those vivid colors not overwhelm the rest of the neutral composition. I’m still working on this one.
Here’s the first painting.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SjWEE5UXMSI/AAAAAAAAAC0/20ZGC72hrdU/s320/083.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347325352212902178" />

The second day in Port Townsend I woke up to misty rain and fog. I walked around town and took pictures, wondering if the weather would clear or if I should attempt a fog painting. I was beginning to warm up to the subtlety of the fog. I took my gear out to one of the wharfs and set up my easel looking back at the buildings disappearing into the fog. This was a new type of subject matter for me and I quickly realized it was not going to be easy. Several hours later I let it go. Perhaps watercolor would work better for these buildings.
I met three nice ladies from Port Angeles and Sequim who came to paint for the day. We had a very enjoyable lunch together at the Fountain Café. Afterwards, I went off and did two more pieces near the Point Wilson lighthouse. So all in all it was a productive trip. I came home with a couple good paintings, some valuable “learning experiences” and about 50 photographs. I’m looking forward to working on more boat paintings in the studio.

Dodging Ducks

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SjWByi7vwtI/AAAAAAAAACs/EeDy8WCalf0/s320/152.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347322837943173842" />

Last week I went to Seattle to take pictures of Duck Dodge. Duck Dodge is the summer evening series of sailboat races on Lake Union. My daughter, Christa, has been doing these races for several years, on friends’ boats and more recently on her own boat. Traffic was nasty and I arrived at Gasworks Park after the start. Immediately I was inspired by the white sails dancing silently across the water before me. The wind was gentle, but steady. Everyone was relaxed and enjoying the beautiful evening - perfect for picture-taking. Lake Union is not large and the course uses all of it. Downtown Seattle is a stunning backdrop for boats of all sizes tacking back and forth across the water. I took a lot of pictures and can’t wait for some time to start some studio work.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/SiRsAUwNnII/AAAAAAAAACk/8xkXWPsF2-Y/s320/135.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342513810794978434" />
This past weekend I drove up to Snoqualmie Pass to find some mountain views. I was thinking to try the Gold Creek area. A short way in lingering snow still buried the road and I was forced to turn around. Other forest roads were clearer, but no view was better than the one just off the frontage road by the freeway. It was sunny, warm and the colors were brilliant, a perfect day to paint. I’ll look forward to returning later in the season.

Skagit Daffodils

Each year I head up to the Skagit Valley to paint the flower fields. The day I went up was cold and threatening to rain (typical April in Puget Sound). It took some driving to find the right spot, but I settled in on a scene with some interesting farm buildings. The result was less than inspiring. The second painting was of a giant field of yellow daffodils. The weather was beginning to clear but the wind had picked up. It was cold and I painted quickly. After getting the subject down simply, I packed up and left for the warmth of home.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 154px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/ShsRjxwcUmI/AAAAAAAAACU/JrIxOz7048A/s200/061.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339881089527468642" />

I usually put my paintings on a shelf in my house for a few days. Looking at them from a distance and with fresh eyes, I can usually find a few areas to touch up or colors to change that will strengthen the painting. Analyzing the daffodil painting, I knew I wanted to fix the foreground and perhaps correct some colors in the background. About 15 minutes in the studio was all it took. Much better!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Le4SasZEh7Q/ShsQEX9SE3I/AAAAAAAAACM/ndzD2_qRGA8/s320/083.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339879450514428786" />

Artist Eyes

Each spring when I return to plein air painting after working in the studio for several months, I rediscover the world again. Like a perennial plant poking back up through the ground, I step out and see the world afresh. Everything becomes more alive and vibrant - the colors are richer, the landscape more defined. I don’t see a house, a tree or a distant hillside, I see colors: faded white barn boards that are at once blue, lavender, brown and even yellow; tree limbs that are not green, but ochre, olive, deep red and mauve. I begin to think in cerulean, alizarin and burnt sienna. I notice light and shadow, forms and lines. I distinguish contrast and subtleties that build compositions. My perceptions have been changed and I am inspired by each new view. Driving down the highway after a day of painting is like driving into a brand new world even though I might have passed that way hundreds of times. Ah, Spring!

Painting with My Best Friend

Recently, I pulled out some unfinished plein air paintings from last year to work on in the studio. It was time to complete the beach scene I started at Deception Pass last fall. There was a reason why this painting was unfinished. His name is Tucker. The subject is a rocky point in between two beaches, near the campground and the main parking lot. I arrived early, knowing that it could be a popular place and thinking I could get a painting completed before the crowd came. I don’t mind people around, but on this painting trip I had my dog, Tucker, with me. He is a two year old lab and can be a handful, especially around people and other dogs.

I set up my easel on the beach and clipped Tucker’s steel line to a nearby picnic table. He had enough line to play and explore, and seemed to be out of reach of trouble. I started laying in the foundation of the painting. Just as I had covered the canvas with the base colors, Tucker caught sight of another dog on the beach. He zipped past my easel with such force that one of the legs collapsed. It started to fall, the jar of thinner went one way, the brushes went another and the painting sailed off over the top landing face down in the sand. Determined not to let this stop me, I picked everything up, put it all back together, then moved his line further away so that he was out of reach of the easel. The wet paint and sand was a disaster. There was nothing to do but let the paint dry to get the sand off. So now, months later with a sand-free painting I was able to go back in and build up the original composition adding shadows and highlights until it resembled that sparkling September day. I call it Tucker’s Point.

Be Prepared

As the weather begins to warm, I look forward to getting outside to paint after the dreary winter months. In mid March I planned to go to the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge in South Puget Sound with Plein Air Washington. Broad fields and marshes are encircled by forests in subtle, yet rich winter hues. I packed my art supplies the night before and loaded the car for an early morning start.

I was eager to be outside painting again. Arriving at the park, the clouds were low and dark. Trusting that the sun would make an appearance later in the day, I took walk to scout out painting sites. I usually start by taking photos of potential subjects, but I discovered I'd forgotten my camera; no matter, I could use quick sketches almost as well. I found a number of possibilities: a particularly tangled tree leaned over its reflection in a quiet pond area, twin white barns stood starkly against the grey sky, and a path through golden willows and marsh grasses suggested a good composition.

After an hour walking and sketching it was still cold and dampwith no sign of sun. I wondered how comfortable I would be standing still for two hours to do a painting. It was then I realized I had grabbed not my old painting jacket, but a nice coat on the way out of the house. I pondered the options. I could take the coat off - but I was cold with the coat; I could leave the coat on and hope to keep it clean - unlikely; or I could head back home to work in the studio and chalk this one up as another lesson learned. I reluctantly headed home, promising that next time I headed out I would be prepared – a must for the plein air painter.
