I have some catching up to do – A couple weeks ago I made a second trip to Anacortes. This time my destination was Washington Park. Many suppose that Highway 20 ends at the ferry. Not so. Continue straight past the ferry to discover that the road actually ends at Washington Park. Jutting out into Rosario Strait is a rugged peninsula with wonderful views of the San Juans. There’s a narrow loop road that circles the park with parking spots along the way. On this Tuesday morning I had it all to myself.
I took advantage of the high overcast to stand out on some rocks by the water’s edge to paint the shoreline to the North. If the sun had been out it would have been too bright on my canvas and I would have had to stand with my back to my subject to keep my painting and palette out of the glare. Sometimes our cloudy skies can be a blessing
By afternoon the sun was out and moved further up the road to a new viewpoint. I found wind-sculpted trees on a sunny hillside above the bay and some shade in which to set up my easel. I was drawn to the path that circled the hillside beckoning one to discover what views lay around the bend. here were a few folks who stopped at the parking lot above but only one couple hiking the trail came o see what I was doing. All in all it was a very pleasant day and I’m looking forward to another trip soon.
